In the days before hi-tech drainage and irrigation systems were introduced into the sporting stadia of the world, rugby pitches were often more mud than grass and players from opposing teams could only be identified by their direction of travel. The image of Fran Cotton and his British Lions team mates covered in mud during the 1977 Lions tour of New Zealand beautifully captures the "muddy pitches, skulduggery in the scrum, beers after the game" nature of the amateur era and is one of the truly iconic sporting images.
