Cycling superstar Mark Cavendish made history in July 2024 when he won his 35th stage victory at the Tour de France - the greatest race in cycling, breaking the previous record he held with cycling legend and 5 time Tour winner Eddie Merckx. Known as the "Manx Missile" Mark Cavendish is widely regarded as the greatest sprinter in cycling history, with his success built on phenomenal sprinting power, supreme race management and tactical positioning in races. After a successful career in track cycling in which he won World and Commonwealth gold medals, Cavendish won his first Tour de France stage wins in 2008 and enjoyed a stellar year in 2011 winning a stage at The Giro d'Italia, five stages in the Tour de France including the showpiece sprint in Paris, becoming the first British cyclist to win the Green Jersey. In September of that year, he became only the second British rider to win the World Road Race title to secure the coveted rainbow jersey. His popularity amongst the British spring public was confirmed as he won almost half the votes to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The focus for cycling fans during the later stages of his career was on whether he could break the Tour de France stage win record. Following his record-equalling 34th Tour stage win in 2021 a series of injuries and near misses including a heart-breaking technical issue on his bike on Stage 7 of the 2023 Tour which he eventually abandoned, he announced his retirement from cycling in 2023, seemingly ending all hope of breaking the record. However, in October 2023, he reconsidered his decision and extended his contract with Astana to keep the dream of the 35th stage win alive. As he lined up for the 2024 Tour, the record was still a distant possibility as a younger breed of powerful sprinters such as Jasper Philipsen had emerged - so his stunning victory on Stage 5 in Saint Vulbas was the ultimate comeback story and one of the all-time great sporting moments.
