Ashes 2005 - The Greatest Series

The 2005 Ashes series is still considered to the greatest test series in cricket history. England reclaimed the Ashes, defeating Australia 2-1 in an epic contest. Sport Photo Gallery has an extensive selection of superb images from the series – all available in a range of print sizes, canvas options or fully framed.

Background and Build Up

The Ashes, played between England and Australia is steeped in history and remains the pinnacle for all English and Australian cricketers. Ashes history is full of legendary moments and iconic figures – The Bodyline Series of 1932/3, Don Bradman out for a duck at The Oval in 1948 when needing only 4 runs in his final test innings to finish with a career average of over 100, Lillie and Thompson terrifying English batsman in the 1970s and Botham’s Ashes heroics in 1981 to name a few.

England were in buoyant mood ahead of the series, ranked 2nd in the world having won 14 of their previous 18 test matches including an away series win in South Africa. Strong performances in the limited overs series before the Ashes, with match-winning innings from England’s new star Kevin Pietersen, only heightened the excitement and expectation amongst England fans. The Australians were the best side in the world and the greatest side of the modern era – a side full of cricketing superstars – Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath - just some of the huge names lining up for Australia. Australian captain Ricky Ponting predicted the closest contest since 1989 but fast bowling legend Glenn McGrath characteristically predicted a 5-0 win for Australia.
