A Dramatic Final
The final, played at Wembley Stadium in front of nearly 100,000 spectators, saw England face West Germany in a thrilling contest. The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regular time, with Geoff Hurst becoming England's hero, scoring twice in extra time to complete a historic hat-trick—the only one ever scored in a World Cup final. England secured a 4-2 victory, with captain Bobby Moore lifting the Jules Rimet Trophy for the first and only time. To add to the drama of the occasion Geoff Hurst's goal to take the lead in extra time was adjudged to have crossed the line by the Russian linesman despite furious protests from the German players. However, there was no doubt about Geoff Hurst's hat-trick goal (England's 4th) struck home emphatically from distance to seal World Cup glory for England. The now legendary words from BBC commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme perfectly describe the winning moment - "And here comes Hurst. He's got... some people are on the pitch, they think it's all over. It is now! It's four!"
